A lot of people think that they are stuck with artex ceilings and that there is no way of getting rid of them unless you board over them. Let’s face it….artex isn’t as popular as it used to be.
In just about every case it is possible to plaster over an artex ceiling. For old deep artex it usually involves applying a layer of bonding coat first to fill the ceiling out. Here’s the main pointers on how we plaster over an artex ceiling:-
- Scrape the high spots off the artex – make sure you wear a good dust mask.
- Seal the ceiling with 1 part PVA and three parts water and allow to dry.
- Glue the ceiling with 1 part water 1 part PVA
- Apply first coat of skim using finishing plaster
- Trowel out forst coat of plaster so that hollows are filled.
- Apply second cost of plaster – a thinner coat just to fill out hollows a little more
- Once the plaster is ’spongey’ trowel out.
- As the plaster hardens and you’ve filled all hollows and levelled out now you can wet trowel.
- Dry trowel
- Wet trowel
- Dry trowel
- Plastered ceiling done!
